In Nationwide Crackdown, Italy Announces ‘Zero Tolerance’ for Illegal Aliens

In the wake of recent Islamic terror attacks in Berlin and Turkey, Italy’s National Director of Public Safety has announced a clampdown on illegal aliens as well as an increase in deportations.

National police chief Franco Gabrielli has sent a circular letter to the country’s police departments announcing a new “zero tolerance” policy toward illegal immigrants, including intensified checks and controls as well as expulsions of foreigners without residence permits.

In the letter, Gabrielli urges “maximum attention from the different branches of law enforcement to track down foreigners in irregular situations through targeted controls.” The police chief also directs law enforcement officers to “establish immediate contact with immigration officials to expedite deportation procedures” for those found to be in the country illegally.

The circular letter underscores the importance of the crackdown “in the current context of crisis in the face of increasing migratory pressures and an international scenario characterized by instability and threats.” The grave situation imposes on law enforcement a “maximum commitment” to keep the territory “under control,” it reads.

The new hardline policy was announced on New Year’s Eve and follows on a deadly truck attack in Berlin earlier this month, when Tunisian jihadist Anis Amri drove a tractor-trailer through a Christmas market, killing twelve and injuring dozens more. Amri was later shot in a skirmish with Italian police in Milan.

New Year’s Eve is considered a particularly vulnerable time due to the large crowds that gather in towns and cities across Europe. Last year’s celebrations were marked by scores of cases of robbery and sexual assault by migrants in the center of Cologne, Germany, resulting in more than 1,000 criminal charges.

On Friday, Italy’s Minister of the Interior Marco Minniti said that the nation’s terror alert remains high, and assured Italians of a “very high security level” regarding possible terror attacks.

“We are keeping a careful watch on the terror risk, with all the agencies and resources in the field to guarantee the security of the territory,” he said.

“But this should not prevent the citizens of our country from feeling safe and celebrating the festivities in all tranquility,” he said.

In Rome, authorities have announced full deployment of law enforcement as of 7:00pm Saturday, with special attention given to national monuments such as the Roman Coliseum and the Circus Maximus, where large throngs are expected and entertainment will be offered.

EPA Orders Freezing Alaskans To Do Do Dumbest Thing Ever

Wood burning stoves are ESSENTIAL to survival in the cold weather…In comes the EPA telling alaskans they can’t burn wood to stay warm because of air quality standards…IDIOTIC!

Like most people in Alaska, the residents of those frozen cities are burning wood to keep themselves warm this winter. Smoke from wood-burning stoves increases small-particle pollution, which settles in low-lying areas and can be breathed in. The EPA thinks this is a big problem. Eight years ago, the agency ruled that wide swaths of the most densely populated parts of the region were in “non-attainment” of federal air quality standards.

That prompted state and local authorities to look for ways to cut down on pollution from wood-burning stoves, including the possibility of fining residents who burn wood. After all, a declaration of noncompliance from the EPA would have enormous economic implications for the region, like the loss of federal transportation funding.

The problem with the EPA bullying the people of Fairbanks about their wood stoves is that the federal government thinks this is a problem that can be solved. What would the EPA have Alaskans do, use solar panels to heat their homes in winter?

Skeptical climate scientists coming in from the cold

In the world of climate science, the skeptics are coming in from the cold.

Researchers who see global warming as something less than a planet-ending calamity believe the incoming Trump administration may allow their views to be developed and heard. This didn’t happen under the Obama administration, which denied that a debate even existed. Now, some scientists say, a more inclusive approach –

and the billions of federal dollars that might support it

– could be in the offing.

“Here’s to hoping the Age of Trump will herald the demise of climate change dogma, and acceptance of a broader range of perspectives in climate science and our policy options,” Georgia Tech scientist Judith Curry wrote this month at her popular

Climate Etc. blog

William Happer

William Happer, professor emeritus of physics at Princeton University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, is similarly optimistic. “I think we’re making progress,” Happer said. “I see reassuring signs.”

Despite harsh criticism of their contrarian views, a few scientists like Happer and Curry have pointed to evidence that global warming is less pronounced than predicted. They have also argued that this slighter warming would bring positive developments along with problems. For the first time in years, skeptics believe they can find a path out of the wilderness into which they’ve been cast by the “scientific consensus.” As much as they desire a more open-minded reception by their colleagues,

they are hoping even more that the spigot of government research funding – which dwarfs all other sources – will trickle their way.

President-elect Donald Trump, who has called global warming a “hoax,” has chosen for key cabinet posts men whom the global warming establishment considers lapdogs of the oil and gas industry: former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to run the Energy Department; Attorney General Scott Pruitt of Oklahoma to run the Environmental Protection Agency; and Exxon chief executive Rex Tillerson as secretary of state.

But while general policy may be set at the cabinet level, significant and concrete changes would likely be spelled out below those three – among the very bureaucrats the Trump transition team might have had in mind when, in a move some saw as intimidation, it

sent a questionnaire

to the Energy Department this month (later disavowed) trying to determine who worked on global warming.

It isn’t certain that federal employees working in various environmental or energy sector-related agencies would willingly implement rollbacks of regulations, let alone a redirection of scientific climate research, but the latter prospect heartens the skeptical scientists. They cite an adage: You only get answers to the questions you ask.

“In reality, it’s the government, not the scientists, that asks the questions,” said David Wojick, a longtime government consultant who has closely tracked climate research spending since 1992. If a federal agency wants models that focus on potential sea-level rise, for example, it can order them up. But it can also shift the focus to how warming might boost crop yields or improve drought resistance.

While it could take months for such expanded fields of research to emerge, a wider look at the possibilities excites some scientists. Happer, for one, feels emboldened in ways he rarely has throughout his career because, for many years, he knew his iconoclastic climate conclusions would hurt his professional prospects.

When asked if he would voice dissent on climate change if he were a younger, less established physicist, he said: “Oh, no, definitely not. I held my tongue for a long time because friends told me I would not be elected to the National Academy of Sciences if I didn’t toe the alarmists’ company line.”

That sharp disagreements are real in the field may come as a shock to many people, who are regularly informed that climate science is settled and those who question this orthodoxy are akin to Holocaust deniers. Nevertheless, new organizations like the

CO2 Coalition

, founded in 2015, suggest the debate is more evenly matched intellectually than is commonly portrayed. In addition to Happer, the CO

Coalition’s initial members include scholars with ties to world-class institutions like MIT, Harvard and Rockefeller University. The coalition also features members of the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorology Society, along with policy experts from the Manhattan Institute, the George C. Marshall Institute and Tufts University’s Fletcher School.

With such voices joining in, the debate over global warming might shift. Until now, it’s normally portrayed as enlightened scholars vs. anti-science simpletons. A more open debate could shift the discussion to one about global warming’s extent and root causes.

Should a scientific and research funding realignment occur, it could do more than shatter what some see as an orthodoxy stifling free inquiry. Bjorn Lomborg, who has spent years analyzing potential solutions to global warming, believes that a more expansive outlook toward research is necessary because too much government funding has become expensive and ineffective corporate welfare. Although not a natural scientist, the social scientist Lomborg considers climate change real but not cataclysmic.

Bjorn Lomborg

“Maybe now we’ll have a smarter conversation about what actually works,” Lomborg told RealClearInvestigations. “What has been proposed costs a fortune and does very little. With more space opening up, we can invest more into research and development into green energy. We don’t need subsidies to build something. They’ve been throwing a lot of money at projects that supposedly will cut carbon emissions but actually accomplish very little. That’s not a good idea. The funding should go to universities and research institutions; you don’t need to give it to companies to do it.”

Such new opportunities might, in theory, calm a field tossed by acrimony and signal a détente in climate science. Yet most experts are skeptical that a kumbaya moment is at hand. The mutual bitterness instilled over the years, the research money at stake, and the bristling hostility toward Trump’s appointees could actually exacerbate tensions.

“I think that the vast ‘middle’ will want and seek a more collegial atmosphere,” Georgia Tech’s Curry told RealClearInvestigations. “But there will be some hardcore people (particularly on the alarmed side) whose professional reputation, funding, media exposure, influence etc. depends on cranking up the alarm.”

Michael E. Mann, another climate change veteran, is also doubtful about a rapprochement. Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State and author of the “hockey stick” graph, which claims a sharp uptick in global temperatures over the past century, believes ardently that global warming is a dire threat. He concluded a

Washington Post op-ed

this month with this foreboding thought: “The fate of the planet hangs in the balance.” Mann acknowledges a brutal war of words has engulfed climate science. But in an e-mail exchange with RealClearInvestigations, he blamed opponents led by “the Koch brothers” for the polarization.

Mann did hint, however, there may be some room for discussion.

Michael Mann

“In that poisonous environment it is difficult to have the important, more nuanced and worthy debate about what to do about the problem,” he wrote. “There are Republicans like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bob Inglis and George Shultz trying to create space for that discussion, and that gives me hope. But given that Donald Trump is appointing so many outright climate deniers to key posts in this administration, I must confess that I – and many of my fellow scientists – are rather concerned.”

Neither side of the debate has been immune from harsh and sinister attacks. Happer said he stepped down from the active faculty at Princeton in part “to deal with all this craziness.” Happer and Mann, like several other climate scientists, have gotten death threats. They provided RealClearInvestigations with some of the e-mails and voice messages they have received.

“You are an educated Nazi and should hang from the neck,” a critic wrote Happer in October 2014.

“You and your colleagues who have promoted this scandal ought to be shot, quartered and fed to the pigs along with your whole damn families,” one e-mailed Mann in Dec. 2009.

Similar threats have bedeviled scientists and writers across the climate research spectrum

, from Patrick Michaels, a self-described “lukewarmer” who dealt with death threats at the University of Virginia before moving to the Cato Institute, to Rajendra Pachauri, who protested anonymous death threats while heading the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Putting such ugliness aside, some experts doubt that the science will improve even if the Trump administration asks new research questions and funding spreads to myriad proposals. Richard Lindzen, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at MIT and a member of the National Academy of Sciences who has long questioned climate change orthodoxy, is skeptical that a sunnier outlook is upon us.

“I actually doubt that,” he said. Even if some of the roughly $2.5 billion in taxpayer dollars currently spent on climate research across 13 different federal agencies now shifts to scientists less invested in the calamitous narrative, Lindzen believes groupthink has so corrupted the field that funding should be sharply curtailed rather than redirected.

“They should probably cut the funding by 80 to 90 percent until the field cleans up,” he said. “Climate science has been set back two generations, and they have destroyed its intellectual foundations.”

The field is cluttered with entrenched figures who must toe the established line, he said, pointing to a recent congressional report that found the Obama administration got a top Department of Energy scientist fired and generally intimidated the staff to conform with its politicized position on climate change.

“Remember this was a tiny field, a backwater, and then suddenly you increased the funding to billions and everyone got into it,” Lindzen said. “Even in 1990 no one at MIT called themselves a ‘climate scientist,’ and then all of a sudden everyone was. They only entered it because of the bucks; they realized it was a gravy train. You have to get it back to the people who only care about the science.”

Ex-CIA "ET's Have Infiltrated the Government"

I received an email from the future RNC Chair, Ronna McDaniel,  personally thanking me for my tireless support of Donald Trump. My analytics tell me that since the inception of the Primary, I had direct contact with 22 million Americans at least one time.  It is humbling to realize the power of the media to shape  public opinion. However, there is another issue that deserves broad coverage and that is the topic of ET’s.

This issue personally touches me and I am making this a front and center. I will continue to report the news, however, I am using my media influence to get to the bottom of the ET issue. It is merely a supplement to my major work which is to continue to fight against the New World Order. By the way, you know those covert sources which have helped me to break stories such as Benghazi and the attempted coup as well as Clinton selling 20% of the uranium of the US to the Russians, that came from my sources who also talk to me about the ET issue as well.

We need to put pressure on Trump to disclose after he dismantles the CIA.

My father worked on the reverse engineering program called Operation Paperclip.  My father stated  that the technology never made its way into NASA. The technology was 300 years ahead of where we were at. My father asked the NAZIS how they became so advanced. To a person, the German scientists said it came from ET sources.

My father never found proof, however, the late Bill Pawelec, ex-CIA operative, told me that the German scientists were correct.  Jim Marrs also confirmed this fact in a book he authored called the 4th Reich.

There was a movie from the 1990’s starring the deranged Charlie Sheen who starred in a movie called the arrival which postulated that an alien race had embedded themselves among us and had assumed to governmental positions (eg Director of NASA).

The following video captures some of the infiltration aspect. I have remained neutral on this topic until recently. Jim Maars once told me that one cannot understand the New World Order without looking at the ET connection. I am beginning to see his point.

This is only part one.  The more damning information will follow.

Guardian histrionics: Luke Harding accuses Putin of threatening U.S. diplomats' kids in paranoid ramblings

“I’m Luke Harding, and I’m a tool.”

Luke Harding claims the invitation from the President of Russia to the children of US diplomats to attend New Year and Christmas parties in the Kremlin is a threat to US diplomats, subtly reminding them that the FSB has “precise information” about their children.

Reading Western media reaction to Putin’s decision yesterday not to retaliate in kind to Obama’s latest sanctions has been instructive, with the tone extending from the admiring, to the factual, and to the furious.

comment however stood out as by far the most unpleasant

, and it came (unsurprisingly to those who follow him) from Luke Harding in the

The statement wished Obama, Trump and the American people a happy new year. It further invited “all the children of American diplomats” to visit the Kremlin’s festive Christmas tree. Instead of playing the Grinch, Putin had taken on the role of Ded Moroz, Russia’s answer to Father Christmas. One Russian MP on Vesti TV said Obama was Bad Santa. It was also a subtle reminder, for those who were able to decode it, that the FSB – the KGB’s successor – has precise information about the children of US embassy personnel. Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday tartly denied reports that Moscow was to close the Anglo-American school, attended by diplomatic kids, and the offspring of bankers and oil workers. (italics added)

The claim that the Russians planned to close the Anglo-American school was indeed furiously denied by the Russians after it circulated for a short time in the media.

Luke Harding nonetheless conflates this claim – which the Russians of course denied, and which almost certainly did not originate either with the senior officials of Russia’s Foreign Ministry or with the Kremlin – with President Putin’s invitation to the children of US diplomats to attend New Year and Christmas parties in the Kremlin,

to construe a threat by the Russians to US diplomats through their children

(“the FSB – the KGB’s successor – has precise information about the children of US embassy personnel”).

This threat is however so “subtle” that only those in the know – including of course Luke Harding himself – are “able to decode it”.

That this is utterly paranoid stuff, turning an invitation to a party into something sinister, should not need saying.

What does Luke Harding think the FSB might do with the “precise information about the children of US embassy personnel” it supposedly has?

That this sort of paranoia gets published in the

unfortunately shows how mainstream it has become. I hope it won’t deter any US diplomats from keeping their children in Moscow, or from letting them go to the parties to which President Putin has invited them.

The philosophical musings of Bruce Lee

You will never get any more out of life than you expect. — Bruce Lee

Although Bruce Lee is best known for his legendary legacy in martial arts and film, he was also one of the most under appreciated philosophers of the twentieth century, instrumental in introducing Eastern traditions to Western audiences.

A philosophy major in college, he fused ancient ideas with his own singular ethos informed by the intersection of physical and psychological discipline, the most famous manifestation of which is his

water metaphor for resilience

Early in his career, Lee was systematically sidelined by Hollywood’s studio system, which operated with extreme racial bias and still used white actors to portray stereotypical Asian characters. Over and over, Lee was told in no uncertain terms that white audiences simply wouldn’t accept an Asian man as a lead character in a movie.

Bruce Lee was a famous martial artist, movie star and social icon.

Not Just Kung Fu

Even when he finally broke through and was cast as a lead, the studios continued to treat him as a brainless robot, there to entertain with his kung-fu skills.

When they tried to cut all the philosophy out of

Enter the Dragon

because they wanted a vacantly entertaining action movie, Lee refused to go on set for two weeks, insisting that the kung-fu and the philosophy were inextricably entwined, each the vehicle for the other.

Hollywood eventually had to relent and it was precisely the philosophical dimension that rendered the movie — just before the release of which Lee met his untimely death in 1973 — a cultural icon and a beacon of racial empowerment associated with the Black Power movement, later acquired by the Library of Congress as a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” artifact.

Lee stood his ground for ancient philosophy amongst the glamour of Hollywood.

Mind And Body Philosophy

Lee saw philosophy as inseparable from everyday life, just as he saw the mind as inseparable from the body, each end of the battery constantly charging the other. He recorded his rigorous workout routine alongside his philosophical meditations, which he fleshed out in the course of living.

Even his handwriting, meticulously neat and measured to fit the tiny page, radiates Lee’s formidable discipline and orderliness.

Like Oliver Sacks, who

carried a notebook everywhere

, Lee always had a tiny 2×3″ pocketbook with him, which he filled with everything from training regimens to the phone numbers of his pupils (who included trainees like Chuck Norris and Steve McQueen), to poems, affirmations, and philosophical reflections. Even his handwriting, meticulously neat and measured to fit the tiny page, radiates Lee’s formidable discipline and orderliness.

Lee carried a notebook with him everywhere to write down his daily musings.

Daily Discipline

But perhaps the most notable portion of his pocketbooks — or day timers, as they were called — were his affirmations, reminiscent of the

rules of conduct

Nobel laureate André Gide penned in his youthful journal, and of artist Eugène Delacroix’s

diaristic self-counsel

In these notes to himself, Lee articulated his personal philosophies aimed concretely at his own growth, but resonating with universally applicable insight into our common psychology, behavior, and human nature.

The 1968 Pocketbook

With special permission from the

Bruce Lee estate

, here is an exclusive look at several pages from his 1968 pocketbook, penned shortly before Lee’s twenty-eighth birthday, each transcribed below, beginning with Napoleon Hill’s “Daily Success Creed”, which Lee copied into his notebooks:

Will Power

Recognizing that the power of will is the supreme court over all other departments of my mind, I will exercise it daily, when I need the urge to action for any purpose; and I will form HABIT designed to bring the power of my will into action at least once daily.

Realizing that my emotions are both POSITIVE and negative I will form daily HABITS which will encourage the development of the POSITIVE EMOTIONS, and aid me in converting the negative emotions into some form of useful action.

Recognizing that both my positive and negative emotions may be dangerous if they are not controlled and guided to desirable ends, I will submit all my desires, aims and purposes to my faculties of reason, and I will be guided by it in giving expression to these.

Recognizing the need for sound PLANS and IDEAS for the attainment of my desires, I will develop my imagination by calling upon it daily for help in the formation of my plans.

Recognizing the value of an alert memory, I will encourage mine to become alert by taking care to impress it clearly with all thoughts I wish to recall, and by associating those thoughts with related subjects which I may call to mind frequently.

Subconscious Mind

Recognizing the influence of my subconscious mind over my power of will, I shall take care to submit to it a clear and definite picture of my CLEAR PURPOSE in life and all minor purposes leading to my major purpose, and I shall keep this picture CONSTANTLY BEFORE my subconscious mind by REPEATING IT DAILY.

Recognizing that my emotions often err in their over-enthusiasm, and my faculty of reason often is without the warmth of feeling that is necessary to enable me to combine justice with mercy in my judgments, I will encourage my conscience to guide me as to what is right and what is wrong, but I will never set aside the verdicts it renders, no matter what may be the cost of carrying them out.

These private musings combine the philosophies of the East and West.

East Meets West

When Lee felt that he had arrived at a particularly significant idea, he wrote it on the unlined back of a plain 3×5″ lined yellow notecard, which he signed, almost like a will or perhaps a contract with himself. He would often refine or copy reflections first recorded in his pocketbook onto the notecards reserved for only his firmest convictions and deepest dedications.

What makes the affirmations especially notable is that they fuse ancient philosophical and spiritual traditions (particularly

Zen Buddhism’s ideas about character, the self, and the ego

), questionable New Age magical thinking, and habits of mind which contemporary psychology has since proven fruitful — a reminder that our personhood is a mashup of our era and our culture, with all their inherent knowledges and ignorances, and it is the way we combine the elements at our disposal that makes us who we are.

Lee wrote is most significant findings on notecards that he signed with his name.

Notecard Affirmations

You will never get any more out of life than you expect.

Keep your mind on the things you want and off those you don’t.

Things live by moving and gain strength as they go.

Be a calm beholder of what is happening around you.

There is a difference a) the world b) our reaction to it.

Be aware of our conditioning! Drop and dissolve inner blockage.

Inner to outer – we start by dissolving our attitude not by altering outer condition.

See that there is no one to fight, only an illusion to see through.

No one can hurt you unless you allow him to.

Inwardly, psychologically, be a nobody.

The writings show us how to cultivate our truest selves and live in harmony.

Never Stop StrivingDefinite Purpose

I know that I have the ability to ACHIEVE the object of my DEFINITE PURPOSE in life; therefore I DEMAND of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.

Dominating Thoughts

I realize the DOMINATING THOUGHTS of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality; therefore I will CONCENTRATE my thoughts for 30 min. daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear MENTAL PICTURE.

I know through the principle of autosuggestion, any desire that I PERSISTENTLY hold will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it; therefore, I will devote 10 min. daily to DEMANDING of myself the development of SELF-CONFIDENCE.

Life Direction

I have clearly written down a description of my DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life, and I will never stop trying until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself.” – Bruce Lee

TRUMP DITCHES PRESS To Make “Last Minute” Surprise Trip

Every hard working person deserves a break…especially if you own a golf course just down the road! President-elect Donald Trump took a break from working to play a round of golf at his Jupiter golf course…

Trump’s golf outing was “a last-minute decision to play”

President-elect Donald Trump played a round of golf at his Jupiter golf course Saturday morning — without notifying the traveling press pool that traditionally reports on his whereabouts.

newsengin-17303808_image2 According to media reports, Trump headed to his Trump National Golf Club sometime in the morning. The golf course sits off Donald Ross Road about a half-hour drive north of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, where he and his family have been spending time for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Mar-a-Lago was slated to host its lavish annual New Year’s gala later Saturday.

A club member tweeted a photo of Trump on the course, saying he was accompanied by about 25 Secret Service agents, The Associated Press reported.

David Markus of Miami was spending some time at the golf club to celebrate the New Year’s holiday when he and his family spotted Trump. He snapped a few photos of Trump, including one with Markus’ three daughters taken near the club’s pool. Markus said Trump started his golf game around 9:30 a.m. and ate lunch around 2 p.m. before leaving the club.

Trump’s golf outing was “a last-minute decision to play”

“We are in the home stretch of this transition period and don’t anticipate any additional situations like this between now and inauguration,” Grisham said in a statement to the AP. “We hope this one incident doesn’t negate all the progress we have made and look forward to continuing the great relationships we have built.”

Grisham said Trump returned to Mar-a-Lago about 3:10 p.m.

FakeNews: Russia hacks Vermont infrastructure! – Old Ukrainian malware found instead

All recent claims of “Russian hacking” are either outright false or are based on “evidence” that only shows run-of-the-mill attacks by some anonymous basement hacker.

The year 2016 saw the person elected U.S. president whom Jeff Bezos’ propaganda rag, the

Washington Post

, hated most. To celebrate the end of this very bad year its writers and editors decided to put more egg on their faces.

It first published the piece promoted

on the left

and some three hours later the fundamentally “corrected” one

on the right

The claim in the first piece, based on anonymous “officials”, was that Russia hacked into the U.S. electricity grid through a utility company in Vermont. But then the utility companies in question, Burlington Electric, issued a

that a recent scan of its IT systems had found

only one laptop with some malware and that the laptop in questions was not connected to its networks at all

. There was nothing found on any net-connected system. It had reported the find to the federal U.S. government. (Some very shortsighted “officials” immediately abused the confidential company information to mis-inform the

Washington Post

.) The utility company found the malware by scanning for a malware signature published in a lame recent assessment by Homeland Security and the FBI.

Dubious claims of foreign hacking of the electricity grid have already been made

in 2009

. Its an old trick of the Obama administration to achieve some political aims.

The Washington Postwas obviously so eager to publish another of its daily “Russian hacking” fakes that it did not even ask the two Vermont utilities in question before pushing the stenographed piece out of the door.

That may well have been because the lead editorial of that day was warning of Putin hacking the U.S. electricity network and (again) hitting at Trump:

For any American leader, an attempt to subvert U.S. democracy ought to be unforgivable — even if he is the intended beneficiary. Some years ago, then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned of a “cyber-Pearl Harbor,” and the fear at the time was of a cyberattack collapsing electric grids or crashing financial markets. Now we have a real cyber-Pearl Harbor, though not one that was anticipated.

Pearl Harbor was followed by the U.S. entry into a world war. Do the editors want to repeat that when alluding to it?

The editorial also pushed a bunch of wholly invented conspiracy theories:

Why is Mr. Trump so dismissive of Russia’s dangerous behavior? Some say it is his lack of experience in foreign policy, or an oft-stated admiration for strongmen, or naivete about Russian intentions. But darker suspicions persist. Mr. Trump has steadfastly refused to be transparent about his multibillion-dollar business empire. Are there loans or deals with Russian businesses or the state that were concealed during the campaign? Are there hidden communications with Mr. Putin or his representatives? We would be thrilled to see all the doubts dispelled, but Mr. Trump’s odd behavior in the face of a clear threat from Russia, matched by Mr. Putin’s evident enthusiasm for the president-elect, cannot be easily explained.

During the election campaign

was the newspaper with the most anti-Trump screeds on its neoconned editorial page. That actually helped Trump by making him the obvious anti-Neocon candidate. But “Pearl Harbor” comparisons and “darker suspicions” beat even the most stupid earlier pieces on him.

I suspect that the pushing of the Vermont hack was also an attempted hit against Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont who was scammed out of the Democratic candidacy by the Clinton aligned Democratic National Council. He would now either have to jump on the “Russian hacking->bad Putin->bad-Trump” train or could be blamed of pro-Russian, pro-Putin and pro-Trump tendencies. All such tendencies are of course bad in the view of the pseudo-liberal Washington establishment which is busy promoting the

New Red Scare

But back to that malware. DHS and FBI had published a “

” (pdf) which again attempted to blame Russia of hacking the Democratic National Council while again providing zero actual evidence of such a hack (hint: there is none). The 13 pages include 2 with amateur graphics of a trivial hack architecture and 7 with amateur advice on how to protect a network. Of interest in it were samples and checksums of moduls of the hacking software it attributed to Russia and a list of IP addresses through which it claims the DNC hack was made. Of special interest is also what

it does not say

Several well known IT security experts have said earlier, like me, that such “reports” and claims are bullshit

. A few more add to that:

Jonathon Zdziarski

Any antivirus company doing any amount of threat intelligence would be able to come up with more solid indicators than FBI released.

John McAfee

(now often nutty but right in this):

If it looks like the Russians did it I can guarantee you it wasn’t the Russians.

Matt Tait

My money’s on this all turns out to be commodity malware and not even APT28/APT29 and everyone jumping on the bandwagon will look v silly

All, and especially Matt Tait, are right.

Wordfence, also a reputed IT security company, took

a detailed look at the samples and tables

in the new DHS/FBI “report” and concludes:

The IP addresses that DHS provided may have been used for an attack by a state actor like Russia. But they don’t appear to provide any association with Russia. They are probably used by a wide range of other malicious actors, especially the 15% of IP addresses that are Tor exit nodes.

The malware sample is old, widely used and appears to be Ukrainian. It has no apparent relationship with Russian intelligence and it would be an indicator of compromise for any website.

There is your “Russian hack” the DHS and FBI claim hit the DNC servers and

falsely claimed hit the U.S. electricity grid.

A run-of-the-mill hack through freely available servers with old Ukrainian malware just like the hundred-thousand others that happen each day.

(Putin is now likely to accept the “Russian Hack” claim if the U.S. corrects the record by helping Russia to annex the source country of the identified malware. “If you give me Ukraine we will also call it ‘the Russian hack’. We will even take responsibility!”)

But if you, like me, believe the word of former British ambassador Craig Murray who works with Wikileaks, there was no hack at all. The DNC data came

via an insider

who had direct access to them. They were handed to Craig for publishing by Wikileaks.

The whole bogus “Russian hacking” and “Putin did it” claims are issued to lock the coming President Trump into an anti-Russian position. Peace with Russia means less plausible “imminent threat” claims and thereby lower budgets and management prestige for the defense and cybersecurity industry and government organizations. That again would mean lower advertisement income for the Washington Post and less money for its staff, editors and owner.

These people would rather have Word War III than to endure that.

Obama, congressional Democrats hell-bent on keeping Obamacare for 22M Americans

© Singapore Buzz Blog 7

Millions of Americans ‒ more than 22 million of them ‒ are wondering what will become of Obamacare in the new year. President-elect Donald Trump has been anything but clear about his plans, but President Barack Obama and Democrats may have an idea.

The outgoing president will confer with Democratic lawmakers about how to proceed with his signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also dubbed “Obamacare”), on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, the day after the 115th Congress is sworn in. The meeting is expected to last “at least one hour,” according to guidance provided by the White House and released to multiple news outlets.

Obama will use the time to

“share his perspective about the dangers posed by Congressional Republicans’

stated strategy to repeal the [Affordable Care Act] before proposing any replacement, creating chaos in the health system in the short run — and holding hostage Americans’ health care — while Republicans develop their plan,” the guidance said.

Trump and Republican leaders

in Congress have

repeatedly pledged to repeal large parts of Obamacare

early next year, citing

rising health insurance premiums

, among other things. It was a promise that may have helped Trump win the election, as voters expressed their dismay that Obamacare premiums were expected to

jump 25 percent in 2017.

The White House announced the increases about two weeks before Election Day.

“On Day One of the Trump Administration, we will ask Congress to immediately deliver a full repeal of Obamacare,” Trump’s campaign website said.

With Republican majorities in both chambers on Capitol Hill, some

22 million people could lose their health insurance if the law is repealed

, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. The GOP has proposed a budget resolution that would fast-track the repeal process for much of the law in early January, The Hill reported.

It’s not that simple

to get rid of the ACA, however, especially since some portions of the law ‒ namely getting rid of pre-existing conditions and allowing children to remain on their parents’ insurance until age 26 ‒ remain overwhelmingly popular, and Trump has indicated he plans to

keep those provisions

. Republicans also don’t want to blamed for that loss of coverage, especially when the

GOP doesn’t appear to have a clear alternative plan

with which to replace Obamacare and its expanded coverage.

Representative Tom Price

(R-Georgia) ‒ an orthopedic surgeon whom Trump has tapped to head the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Obamacare ‒ has

offered a replacement plan in the past.

Before he can be confirmed and sworn in, however, he will remain atop the House Budget Committee, and will likely be a central figure in the repeal efforts.

One thing Republicans don’t have to worry about, though, is the lack of a supermajority in the Senate. Normally, 60 votes are required for cloture, meaning that a bill can be brought to the floor of the upper chamber. However, the GOP plans to repeal Obamacare through a

process known as reconciliation,

which would only require a simple majority.

Republicans will need Democrats to cross the aisle for a cloture vote for any replacement plan, however.

Despite being effectively shut out of the vote,

Democrats still see an opportunity to prevent the repeal

of Obamacare: Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) will

host rallies against the repeal

on January 15. On top of that, pro-ACA groups are

airing ads

in states like Arizona and Nevada, where Republican senators may be vulnerable in the 2018 midterm elections, according to The Hill.

Pelosi hinted

at another way that the Democrats may prevent the repeal of Obamacare, as well as any prospective GOP efforts to overhaul Medicare and Medicaid, during a conference call with House Democrats earlier this week, an aide on the call

Politico. She reportedly noted that

she sees parallels

between the Republicans’ efforts now with President George W. Bush’s attempts to privatize Social Security in 2005.

Health care is likely not the only topic that Obama will address during Wednesday’s meeting, according to incoming House Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley (D-New York). “There are a myriad of issues he could address,” Crowley told Politico. “As he retires from public office, we’re left to defend the advancements he’s made. Not only as a party, but as a people.”

The meeting is scheduled for 9am in the Congressional Visitors Center auditorium.
